there's no place like home

I'm clicking my ruby red slippers and going home!

The past two and half years have been absolutely incredible living here in the Middle East.  The people I've met, the experiences I've had...amazing.  And I've been blessed to do work that I feel is a true service to humanity.  I've learned, laughed and developed in more ways than I ever thought possible.

Even so, I am beyond happy to be moving back to the US!  So. Happy.
I fly out tomorrow and if all goes well I'll be in my queen size bed on the other side of the ocean on 1 January 2012.  What a wonderful way to start the New Year!

Thank you again to all of you for your support this year!
I'm so thrilled for all the exciting new opportunities that are coming my way in 2012.
{that includes the blog too...stay tuned!}

Whether your New Year's Eve is sparkly & glamorous or comfy & casual,
I hope you're safe and enjoy the celebrations!

Happy New Year!
wishing you & yours all the very best in 2012!

see y'all on the flip side
a new continent and a new year!

As I get settled in, my favorite girls are covering for me for a few days!
Lots of fun in store next week!

{guest post} zebra chic

My dear friend and super talented designer, Mojan, is here with you today.  She is so stylish and sweet and I'm so lucky to know her!

Welcome Mojan!

Hi everyone!  Mae and I (and many of you) share a mutual love for leopard print. It’s definitely well-represented in my tiny closet! Wearing leopard print has become so normal for me that it’s basically a neutral—I no longer associate it with the tacky, over-the-top fashion of the 90s.

Zebra print, on the other hand, I’ve never really embraced, and I’m not sure why. And judging from the fact that leopard print is on every girl outside my apartment but not one of them is in zebra, I’m guessing that I’m not the only one. Designers are doing zebra print right now—but people? Not so much.

So I posed the question on my Facebook page. Why leopard, why not zebra? Most of my girlfriends responded with the same two gripes about zebra print: too bold, too difficult to pull off. One girl said, “Two words: horizontal stripes.” Another said, “Leopards inspire curiosity. Have you ever heard the sound a zebra makes? It doesn’t inspire much more than laughter.”

But I’m the type who always roots for the underdog, so I really want to give zebra print a chance. In my search for inspiring examples, I came across this one of Olivia Palermo—my favorite find, not surprisingly—whose zebra print scarf and crazy stripe sweater are perfectly mismatched and effortless-looking.

And then I found these examples, which my friends might nix solely based on the horizontal-stripe issue, and others might nix on the head-to-toe-boldness issue, and yet, looking at these, I’m starting to feel like maybe I can do zebra after all!

Now I’m on the lookout for chic, zebra print pieces suitable for a kinder, gentler budget, and so far, I’m not disappointed. Check out these finds:

So, are you convinced? Will you be one of the few people wearing zebra print this season?

Or… have I inspired not much more than laughter?

Thank you, Mae, for inviting me to guest post today!
I hope you all have a chance to visit my blog on design, d├ęcor, and style.
Have a great day!

I'm ready to embrace zebra, Mojan! You won me over with that photo of OP!

I'll see you soon lovies,

{fashion files} new year's eve

Time is going by so quickly, especially this week...I've been doing a bit of last minute prep but most everything is taken care of so I've had the chance to just spend time with the people I love (and am going to miss) the most.  With all of this moving-across-the-world hoopla, I almost forgot it's about to be a New Year!

I've had some pretty incredible New Year's Eve experiences including atop the Eiffel Tower, a party in Prague, and numerous fun celebrations with family & friends.  I'm a lucky girl.  But I must admit I'm a little sad that I won't get to dress up for NYE this year because I'll be on a plane.  The fact that that plane is taking me back to America makes it all worth it though.  Still, I thought I would share what I wish I was wearing to ring in 2012 and what in reality I will most likely be wearing.

What are you wearing for New Year's Eve?
If you need some ideas, Lauren shared some beautiful dresses last week...check it out!

until next time,

{year in review} 2011 favorites

Hello my dears!
Things are winding down on this side of the world.
As I've been packing and preparing to leave, I've also been reflecting on this whole blogging journey.  What a crazy ride it's been!
Here are a few of my favorite posts, including where it all began:

this is how it all started! on 29 June, 2011 with
a picture of some sparkly dresses & my very first post!

if you're going away for any last minute holidays, this guide on what to pack will surely help you out!

and don't forget to check out these beauty sleep and travel essentials! my must-haves.

this post on workwear has served me well on several mornings! plenty of inspiration for getting ready for the office.

And speaking of the office, these offices are totally dreamy.  I'll be revisiting this post as reference when I start to decorate!

Lessons learned from 64 days of blogging.  Not much has changed 180 days into it.

This time last year, I was in Rome!  Looking through these streetstyle pics I took makes me want to go back!

And because I'm a diehard football fan, and because my Cowboys are playing in the Fiesta Bowl next week (our first BCS Bowl Game!), I'll close with this post on how football inspires my style.

Thanks for walking down memory lane with me today!

until tomorrow,

{currently coveting} snow

Happy Monday!

If you celebrated Christmas yesterday, I hope that it was wonderful and filled with family and love.
It's my final week here in the Middle East. It's really hard to believe that two and a half {incredible} years have come to an end and I'm moving on to the next chapter of my life.  Certainly one of the best parts of living on the shores of the Mediterranean has been the beautifully temperate weather.  But, I miss the snow!  The holiday season just isn't the same without it!  It's been 3 years since I've woken up to streets lined with fluffy white snow.  And as I prepare to leave the gorgeous palm trees and sandy beaches, I can't wait to land back in the US in the middle of winter!

Don't worry, I won't ride a bike through the snow with a party dress on.
This is what I'll wear for my first snow day:

Are you a cold-weather gal?
When's the last time you played in the snow?

enjoy your day,

{friday's fancies} winter white

This week's Friday's Fancies are all about winter white.
The first outfit that comes to mind, every time, is Jennifer Lopez's gorgeous ensemble in Maid in Manhattan. Remember that movie?!  It's the perfect, classic white outfit.
Simple and chic. I absolutely love it.

How are you wearing winter white?

Big thanks to you all...this blog is so much fun because of you!
And a special welcome if you're visiting from
Friday's Fancies, so lovely to have you here today!

to those of you celebrating Christmas this weekend, I hope it's merry & bright

{guest post} warming up for winter

Meggy is here guest posting today and I couldn't be more excited.
I'm not quite sure how I found her blog, but as soon as I did...I was hooked.  She is super-stylish, I love her outfits and she is just about the cutest pregnant lady/new mama I have ever seen!
Plus, I love that she's from Kansas...so close to my home state of Oklahoma!

Welcome Meggy!

Hello Lili and Mae readers! I'm Meggy from Chasing Davies, guest posting for Mae as she moves back to the U.S.!  I don't know about where you live, but here in the Midwest it's starting to get downright cold!  Time to really bring out those winter favorites...but I don't want to look like an over stuffed marshmallow to keep warm, so here are a few of my go to chic, but cozy winter wears!

Faux Fur: So toasty warm and right on trend this season.  Easy to dress up or down.  I have a faux-fur vest & snood and wouldn't be too scared to get stuck in a winter storm with those babies on.

Vest by BB Dakota & Snood from ASOS

Chunky Knit: Knits can be found in bounty all over and the sweater soft material is super warm.  These days, a hat, gloves and scarf can be found as style statements instead of just keeping us warm!

Knit Cowl; Embellished Knit Hat; Long Knit Gloves that keep your arms warm, too!

Oversized: Cardigans, Ponchos, Sweaters, etc all oversized and cuddly keep me extra warm and they usually add an extra shield to my bum!

Grandpa Cardigan with Toggles; Oversized Sweater; Printed Cape

Tall Boots: Of course you wear boots in the winter, who doesn't?  A great way to keep warm.  But some boots are better than others with extra warmth on the inside and/or waterproof on the outside - good for trudging through parking lots and to and fro you car.

Sherpa Lined Faux-Suede Boots; Fleece Boot Liners for your current boots that might not be as warm; my personal fav go-to winter boot: Joan of Arctic Boot by Sorel, I think the faux-fur top adds something fun to an otherwise snow boot; For around the house...so cozy are these Corene Bootie Slippers from Target

There you have it, now you are covered from head to toe and warm as if you were home by the fire... well, maybe not, but at least you look good while trudging through the sleet, snow and bitter wind.  Joy oh joy, doesn't that sound fun.  So much to look forward too, but thankfully we have the Holidays to distract us some.

How do you stay warm and look cute?

Thanks so much to Mae for having me here today!

Meggy from Chasing Davies

Thanks so much Meggy!
I'm heading back to Chicago so I can certainly use all the tips I can get to stay warm and {hopefully} cute!
I think the oversized sweaters are my favorite winter warmth trend, though I'm a bit addicted to my Uggs too!

{guest post} New Year's Eve dresses

Hello my dears! The lovely Lauren is here sharing her picks for one of my favorite nights out: New Year's Eve!  I love Lauren's style so I'm thrilled to welcome her here today.
Take it away love

Hello Lili & Mae readers! It's Lauren from L.A. in the bay! So happy to be with you all today. Thought I would share with you some of my favorite dresses right now that would be perfect for New Years Eve.

 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

Typically you see a lot of black and gold NYE dresses, but why not wear something super flirty like that blush colored Alicia & Olivia dress? Either way, I say choose something that makes you feel beautiful and classy.

Which is your favorite?

Thanks for having me Mae!

Thanks Lauren! I love them all, but number 2 and number 6 are my favorites!
Can't wait to see what you all wear for the big night.
Stay tuned next week, I'll give you a peek at my outfit!

{guest post} travel style

Hi loves!  I know lots of you are preparing to travel for the holidays so I'm so excited that one of my favorite Chicago bloggers, Lesley from Six Twelve Place, is here to share her take on airport style.  I'm all about the comfort, but as Lesley proves you can still look good too!

Welcome Lesley!

For many of us, the holidays mean many hours spent traveling as we head home to visit our family and friends, and of course, Mae will be clocking plenty of airport hours on her move back to the States!  Travel style is all about being comfortable and functional {dang TSA security checks!}  As you prepare for your own holiday travel, take note from my friends Rachel, Gwen and Eva and wear thin layers and comfortable shoes.; pack a chic carry all tote and consider yourself ready to fly the friendly skies.

Thanks Lesley!
You've totally inspired my travel outfit for the long trip home!

until tomorrow,

life lately {via instagram}

Happy Monday dolls!
It's down to the wire!  These are my last few days at work and I'm wrapping things up next week
before I hop on a plane and officially move back to the US!

Just wanted to share a few highlights of life lately...

top: monogram necklace from M&C...obsessed / pulled all 6 out of my purse pocket...slightly obsessed / a sunny day by the Mediterranean
middle: found a jewel as I was packing / snakeskin journal / booties from Paris
bottom:  a little Chanel & faux fur courtesy of my mom / my watch collection / the perfect fall beverage

I'm so excited to link up for the first time with a {little} dash of ash for her Instagram party! A big welcome if you're visiting from there!

Seriously, Instagram is my new favorite.
My username is liliandmae if you'd like to follow along, and please do leave your info in the comments below. I would love to see your photos!

hope it's a great week,

{fashion files} wrapped up in a bow

I associate bows with two things: presents and brides.
But lately I've been loving a beautifully placed bow as just the right accent for fashion pieces.
So as you're creating those perfect little packages for your Christmas presents, don't forget to wrap yourself up in a bow too!

What's your verdict?
Are you wearing bows this season?

hope you have a lovely weekend,

my fair {isle} lady

I'm not traditionally a fan of Fair Isle, so I don't know what came over me when I ordered this sweater from Old Navy. Most likely it was the magic of Cyber Monday combined with a craving for something that reminds me of snow (and home).
Whatever it was, it stuck because I'm now obsessed with this pattern!

Do you own any fair isle pieces?

enjoy your day,

{guest post} 70s Flair

Happy Wednesday my dears! I'm so excited to have the gorgeous Natasha here today!
Hers was one of the first blogs I started following, and I just love it!

Welcome Natasha!

Hello lili and mae readers!  I'm Natasha from Schue Love and I'm so excited to be here today, talking about one my favorite things...fashion!

One of my favorite style trends right now is inspired by the 70's.

I have always had a soft spot for tie-dye and turquoise jewelry...oh and a little faux fur!  This ensemble encompasses a lot of what I love right now!

I've had this Suzi Chin for Maggy Boutique dress bookmarked for quite some time!  It's got the tie-die treatment while still looking elegant.  To give it a more night-time look, I added this awesome Top Shop blazer.

Another trend I am loving right now is knee-high socks.  They look great with boots but also heels!  It allows you to wear your heels longer in the winter too.

Of course, no 70's inspired outfit is complete without a turquoise accent and this cuff is perfection.  Also loving this Furla handbag...just the right touch of fur!  And to help the budget, I found these cute little crystal earrings...a steal at just $22.95!

So, what do you think of the 70's trend?  Are you stocking up this winter?

Thanks so much to Mae for having me today!

xo natasha

Thanks so much Natasha! That dress is absolutely stunning!
I've been really loving 70s style lately so I just had to share a few of my 70s inspired pins:

See you all tomorrow!

{guest post} bring on the red!

Another one of my favorite lawyer/fashion bloggers, Neda, is here today!  Neda's blog, Peony Park, features gorgeously delightful inspiration.  I'm so glad to have connected with Neda and thrilled that she's here sharing some red hot goodies with you all.

Welcome Neda!

Hello, Lili & Mae readers! This is Neda from Peony Park, and it's a pleasure to be here! Lovely Mae is such an inspiration and her beautiful blog reflects her elegant style. My post today was actually inspired by Mae's pretty red blouse.

Let's talk about the beautiful, vibrant, sultry, passionate, stunning color red! I believe that red is really having a moment. I know we've seen pieces of red in seasons past, but I don't recall the last time we had so many examples of vibrant red, the red that makes a statement and lingers in the mind long after it makes its appearance. And, what better time to embrace the very essence of red than in December? Here are some of my favorite ways to incorporate red into your world...

1. Beauty~  Red nails via classic Chanel colors or a vibrant red lipstick. Red looks good on everyone. You just need to find your perfect shade.

2. The Classic Red Dress~ It's impossible not to feel amazing in a beautiful red dress. Two of my current favorites are from Peter Pilotto and Tibi.
3. Accessories~ Try the faux fur trend with a red collar or invest in red jewelry...red and gold always make a stunning combination.
4. Handbags and Clutches~ everyone should have one red clutch or sharp red bag. It's the easiest "pick me up" for any outfit.
5. Asymmetrical blouses~ I'm in love with unique shapes this season, especially for evening. This Vionnet top is a work of art.
6. Blazers~ I loved Mae's post about blazers...a red one would really make a striking statement with jeans.
7. Red Flowers~ the ultimate expression of love...pack the red dahlias and roses together and make it even more grand and spectacular!

I hope this inspires you to pick up that red lipstick or to slip on that red dress...enjoy and celebrate in red, and you're guaranteed to feel special!

Thanks again for having me, Mae!!
Happy Holidays, everyone!

Thanks again Neda!  You've totally inspired me to add more red to my wardrobe!  I've also been on the hunt for the perfect shade of red lipstick...thanks for the tip!

Also, just another little update: the final countdown to the big move has begun! So sorry if I'm a little MIA for the next few weeks. I miss you all & your beautiful blogs! Will stop by to visit soon!

have a wonderful day my dears,

{fashion files} candy colored coats

Living by the Mediterranean certainly has its advantages, gorgeous weather being one.
So I haven't had much need for a winter coat.  But as I prepare to return to the US {and Chicago's crazy winter weather} I've been shopping online for a coat.  While I usually default to black and occasionally grey, I've decided this is the year I'm purchasing a colorful coat.

What color is your winter coat?
Do you always go for black like me?

Happy Monday!

{wear that room} holiday party

This week's Friday's Fancies is all about the holiday party!  It was so fun to dream up the perfect party outfit and all the better to do it as part of my wear that room feature...the holiday-decorated living room was just the inspiration I needed!  This has been a really long & tough week...lots of ups & downs.  I haven't had one like this in a while, so I'm a bit exhausted.  But, still counting my blessings and happy to be surrounded by all this good cheer.

Hope your weekend is wonderful!

here's to a happy new week & fresh beginnings,

{guest post} stocking stuffers!

Hi loves, I'm so excited to have the newlywed Viviana here today.
Viv's one of my favorite blogging girls, so I'm thrilled she's here sharing her picks for stocking stuffers!

Welcome Viviana!

Hi Lili & Mae followers! I'm Viv from the fashion and style blog, Fashion Truffles, and I'm so excited to be over here sharing my favorite stocking stuffers! Gifting is one of my favorite things. I like brainstorming long and hard about what my hubby, family, or secret santa would just love to receive. And whoever came up with the concept of stocking stuffers is just simply brilliant! They make for perfect little presents when you don't want to break the bank.

These are just some of my favorites...

Thanks, Mae, for having me over here sharing my favorite stocking stuffers!
And don't forget to stop by Fashion Truffles for more every day fashion and style inspiration.

Thanks Viv!
I can't pick a favorite, but I'm really loving that Clair Vivier clutch and those J.Crew earrings!

See you tomorrow lovies,

{guest post} holiday wishlist

Happy Wednesday my dears!  The always stylish Lynsey from Law of Fashion is here today sharing her holiday wishlist...she has some majorly lust worthy items!  I'm so happy to have found another lawyer in the fashion blogosphere and a super high fashion lawyer at that.  The girl's got amazing California style and her blog is full of business casual inspiration and more.

Welcome Lynsey!

When Mae asked me to share my holiday wish list with her readers, I immediately started thinking about all the things I am lusting after this holiday season.  Which turned out to be not so small a list.  But because Mae only asked me to write a guest post and not take over her entire blog, I decided to try and narrow the list.  So for those of you who are looking for something to ask for this holiday season (or, if you are like me, something to go out and buy for yourself and then wrap up), I managed to break it down to my Top Eight.

1.  I am capital-letter-O OBSESSED, with leather this season.  And if you have read my blog, then you also know that anything with a waterfall front is pretty much calling my name.  So combine the two, and I am sold, making this DAY Birger Et Mikkelsen ($676.50) leather beauty pure perfection.  And being the impractical, “I-buy-everything-in-crazy-colors” shopper that I am, I still don’t own a black leather jacket.  I think it’s about time…don’t you?

2.  I recently donated my black sunglasses to a patron of the Barney’s shoe department (i.e., I got distracted by all the pretty pumps and left them in a chair).  Thus, these Karen Walker sunnies ($180.00) aren’t just on my “wish list”, they are on the “I need these urgently” list.

3.  It’s winter, so what kind of holiday wish list would I be making if I didn’t throw in at least one sweater?  Not a good one.  Well, lucky for you chickadees, who needs an old holiday sweater when you can have a hip hot intarsia version.  And nothing says I am a tough cookie like this Joseph Tiger sweater ($381.50).  Imagine it with leather leggings…  HOT.

4.  I have a friend who believes that no look is complete without a scarf.  And since I wear a lot of outfits, one can never have enough scarfs.  King of scarves?  Alexander McQueen ($595.00).

5.  Yes, I have an iPhone.  Yes, I am aware that it has the ability to keep track of my calendar and alert me when I have appointments.  Well call me old fashioned, romantic, nostalgic… I don’t care what you call me, just as long as you call me! Anyway… I happen to think there is something chic and wonderful about having a mini-date book in your purse to check for appointments.  So, since my Tiffany one is running on empty (only three weeks left!), I desperately need a new one ($95.00).

6.  I have been wanting this Yves Saint Laurent ring ($250.00) for what feels like an eternity.  Therefore, it is going to be on any list I make until the day I make it mine…somehow.

7.  Ever since I saw Taylor Thomasi Hill bouncing around New York Fashion Week with one of these Celine pouches, I knew I wasn’t going to be complete until I had one of these babies in my clutch.  Get it?  My clutch?  Eh, it was worth a shot.  Anyway, nothing says “Happy Holidays” like covet-worthy Celine.  Now if you can just find a retailer who has one...

8.  And finally, I am major lusting after these Alexander Wang boots ($236.25) for winter.  Because a girl can never have too many pairs of black booties, and you can never have too much Wang.

Oh my, that Celine pouch!  And the planner.  And the scarf.
Love all of your picks Lynsey! Thanks for sharing your wishlist with us!

So which one is your favorite item from Lynsey's list?
What else are you wishing for this holiday season?

until next time,
