No doubt you’ve heard of LaMer, the skincare line whose products are well into the hundreds of dollars. And while I always appreciate good skincare, I don’t necessarily want to spend a car payment on moisturizer. I’m always looking for good alternatives and dupes for some well-known products. That’s why I was so excited to find Weleda, because Into The Gloss called Skin Food a natural LaMer! It’s daunting to find luxurious products that actually work, feel good, are affordable and clean. That’s a lot! But Weleda to the rescue! This post is all about the light version of Skin Food. I prefer that because I mostly use it on my face. If you just wanted to use Skin Food as a body moisturizer, I think the standard version would be great! But I really like the consistency of the Light version and use it for both face and body.
What’s In It
Weleda Skin Food is a super product because it’s full of incredibly rich ingredients that are so good for your skin. It includes sunflower seed oil, which is packed with essential fatty acids to soften skin and keep it moisturized all day/night. Sunflower seed oil is also high in Vitamin E, which is the holy grail vitamin for skin! Skin Food also contains hydrolyzed beeswax. (Hydrolyzed means that it’s been changed enough that there won’t be texture issues and it can still be applied smoothly.) Other ingredients also include sweet almond oil, pansy extract (to soothe irritation), and extracts of gentle viola tricolor, calendula and chamomile. What did I tell you – super product!
The Smell & Consistency
Weleda Skin Food does have a smell, but I don’t find it too strong. It’s citrus / tropical scent and so far, it has not irritated my skin. The consistency is thick, but again that’s why I like to use the Light Nourishing Cream. Some people may find the consistency too thick. If Skin Food is too rich for your liking, you can always dilute it by adding a drop to your favorite day or night moisturizer.
How To Use It
Weleda is VERY affordable, especially compared to LaMer so use it how you’d like to use LaMer if money were no object. Haha! If you find it’s too thick to work with, first warm it up in your hands. Again, it’s very rich so similar to La Mer, it goes on easier when you warm it up first! It makes a fabulous night cream especially during the winter.
Eye Cream
I personally do use Weleda Light Skin Food as an eye cream. I know this may not work for everyone, especially if you have very sensitive skin. First, I put Skin Food all over my face and then once I’ve applied it all over, I’ll take my fingers and gently pat around my eyes. So basically, whatever is left over on my fingers gets applied to my eyes. That ensures that I don’t over-saturate the delicate skin around my eye area.
Travel
Weleda Skin Food is great for long flights. Think of it as a mask that you can use while in the air. (It’s similar usage to Summer Fridays’ Jet Lag Mask.) Once I’m up in the air, I’ll use a wipe to get any lingering dirt and then add a nice layer of Light Skin Food. Just make sure that your skin is shiny, but not too thick! Let it soak into your face while on the flight and when you land, your skin will be glowing and hydrated. You can also apply to your cuticles, elbows, and hands!
Dry Spots
Weleda Skin Food was originally intended for super dry spots such as elbows, hands and feet. (But once In The Gloss named it a natural LaMer dupe, the beauty gurus took over!) So even if you don’t want to apply it to your face, you can use it as an overnight treatment to help smooth rough skin.
For A Little Glow
Makeup artists use this trick for a little glow: apply just a dab of Weleda Skin Food over makeup to leave a pretty sheen. Think of it as natural highlighter. I don’t like to put it over my face makeup but I do like to put it around the top of my cheekbones, near (but not too close to) my eyes.
Have you used Weleda Skin Food? Do you prefer the regular version or the light? Any other tips for use?
